Overview

A blast from the past this tree is exceptionally rare in the wild. This species is considered a relic species, a plant that was more widespread when California’s climate was cooler but is now restricted to a few locations in San Diego and Los Angeles. Younger trees resemble the popular Italian Cypress in form and get more rounded as they age. It’s evergreen foliage and form makes it a good specimen tree for the landscape. This species is very drought tolerant and too much supplemental irrigation can be detrimental. It makes a great hedge or screen plant.

Anecdotal Experiences

  • Rapidly growing, especially with supplemental water but it can get floppy with too much water. You don’t want to overwater.

  • Better to start with a 1 gallon or stake a 5 gallon for the first few years
