Overview

Rare in California due to habitat loss. Found only along the Pacific coast of Baja and San Diego. They do have sharp red spines so plant them in areas away from pets or children. Very drought tolerant.

History

Urban development has significantly diminished the population in California, with the construction of the border wall in 2008 eliminating most of the individuals north of the border. Native West was able to salvage some during the border wall construction and replanted them on our property (second photo).

Uses

Great accent plant for a xeriscape garden.

Anecdotal Experiences

  • Watered them twice in the beginning, then didn’t water them at all and they are doing great
